Welcome to this Tracy Shore quest
We think it’s one of our very best
To find our treasure box will surely be a test
Thanks for taking your time to invest
For half a year, our class wandered these lands
From the high cliffs to the shoreland mud and sands
For this quest, we spent months writing
Perhaps some live animals or dens, you will have a sighting
Animals are our chosen focus
Their habits and their homes’ locus
You’ll learn a lot in these poetic lines
We’ll teach you to notice animal signs
For instance, there are 9 species of woodpeckers in Maine
The yellow-bellied sapsucker with its red head may look very vain
If you see a super even spacing of holes in an apple tree
It’s made by a bird, most likely the sapsucker it would be
Follow each of our stanzas very very closely
Read previous stanzas if you need, but look forward, mostly
If you get stuck and are unsure where you are
Backtrack to the place where you’re sure you weren’t too far
From the kiosk, enter the woods and cross a short wooden bridge
A fork in the Blue Loop Trail is ahead just a smidge
Down the left trail a 2nd footbridge will eventually appear
Across it, something important is growing near
There are lots of animals here
Birds and bugs and some deer
Full of life, laughs, and fun
My friend, your quest has just begun
Animals live in the pines
They may be hard to find
But the forest is their home
This is where they roam
Follow each blue-colored blaze
Through our Tracy Shore maze
If you see a hole in the ground or in a tree
Think to yourself, what could it be?
Many animals dig holes in the ground
You’ll find some if you just look around
The hole’s size is JUST big enough for the animal- perfection!
This is so that the hole provides maximum protection
If a porcupine is what you want to find
Look in a hole or a tree, but be kind
If you or your prized canine pet get quilled and feel in a fog
Cut the top of the quill and it will come more easily from your dog
Up ahead is the white trail
Wait...that could be a deer’s tail
Just don’t go the white trail way
‘Cause that won't help you find the treasure today
Under a 3rd footbridge will be a small stream
Uphill you walk with little time to daydream
Keep going straight and find the yellow blaze
From this intersection you can go four different ways
Go left and down the hilly yellow trail way
Now you’re at a cove, not at a bay
Left on orange over the wooden bridge planks
Feel free to take a breath by the waterfall’s banks
As you hike up the steep ledge
Try not to look over the waterfall's edge
In the summer months, the waterfall is not always there
When it’s dry, it is the perfect crossing for the hare
Deer are incredible creatures
They have some amazing features
A deer will make its own bed
In the tall grass, it has been said
If you bump into a barkless tree
It may have curvy patterns for you to see
It is from a baby beetle; wood is its food
Don’t knock it down because that’s just rude
Smell the Maine salt air
Remember the woods needs to be handled with care
From the tallest tree to the smallest fern
From small chipmunks to each tiny earthworm
Chipmunks are very, very fast
We bet you've seen one in the past
They are red, brown, and gray
Maybe you will see them run and play!
A chipmunk looks very cute
But can often act like a brute
They steal food from each other
Whether it is a friend, foe, or brother
You have found the waterfall
And may hear a bird’s call
Don’t cross this small seasonal stream
Stay left, follow orange, don’t daydream
Walk, following each orange blaze
Through the uncomplicated maze
The salt air is strong in your nose
As the pine sap smell comes and goes
On this trail, you have to walk, walk, walk
You may see or hear a cool hawk
Finally you will be between two stone walls
Stop a moment and listen to the bird calls
The right wall is quite high
The one on the left, a little guy
In every little crevice you must peer
The treasure box is very near
Look in the side of the taller cliff to see the box
There will be more than a couple of rocks
It will be out of your sight; it’s very hard to find
But since you are here, you probably don’t mind
The box is in a small cave
Look inside, be brave
Inside, it sits on a stone shelf
It is time to open the treasure box yourself
At last you have found the box!
We hope this is one of your most treasured walks
Now leave your mark in the notebook
Then put it back in the exact same nook
You found the box, now you’re really cool
But there is just one simple rule
You cannot tell anyone where it is
If you do, you broke the rules of this “quiz”
At the next intersection, take a left for a short bit
To a Jones Cove overlook, please admire it
Enjoy the view and stay here for a while
To return to your car, it‘s about a mile
You should probably watch out for the 75 foot drop
Or you may fall into the water with a great big plop
Use your eyes, ears, and keen sense of smell
But, to respect this place and its peace, please do not yell
Turn right back toward the box, so you don't get lost
Or you may have to pay a very big cost
On the way back, be sure to stay left and straight on the orange trail
Or in these woods you may grow very old and frail
Stay left the whole time you roam
On your mile long journey home
A mile is approximately 1.609 km long
And remember don’t turn right or you’re wrong
Take a left on yellow from the familiar bench
Try not to smell the skunks’ stinky stench
Left on blue and through a wall of stone
Look in every crack; that might be a chipmunk zone
Congratulations, you’ve finished the quest
You have passed through our test
Go home, enjoy your accomplishment now
Just think, you’ve done it. Wow!
