Quests of
South Bristol, Maine
written by the 5th and 6th grade classes at South Bristol School
2009-present
Introduction
A quest is a poetic scavenger hunt designed to teach the quester about a particular location and to get him/her outside and active in the community. This is a different way to explore the town and its preserves. The authors of each quest intended to make an engaging, poetic quest that teaches something to the quester. Sometimes we teach you about the history of the area, sometimes about the flora, and in one quest, you learn some geometry.
Quests are inherently difficult to write. No matter how easy we intend to make the clues, it is always a challenge for questers to make sense of all of our words. We are very intentional in our word choice. Careful reading and rereading is essential in a good quester. Distances are one of the most challenging aspects of writing a quest. Sometimes landmarks are just feet from one another and sometimes they are up to a 1/4 mile apart. Our suggestion is to read carefully, reread what you’ve read, look ahead a little in the text, and be flexible in how far apart you think things might be. At several points in the quest, you will feel confident that you are in the right place. At other times, you will feel unsure. Trust us, you’ll make it through each and every quest. You may miss a landmark or three, but you’ll make it.
At the end of each quest is a plastic waterproof box that contains a journal for questers to write in. There is also a stamp for you to place on your paper quest to prove that you successfully made it to our box.
We hope you enjoy these South Bristol quests. Look for more in the future.
