As you walk the Library Park Preserve
Give it the respect that it does deserve Stay on the trail Because everything's frail It needs you to protect and conserve You may see prints of a bear A dog, a squirrel, or a hare The birds in the trees Sing a small tease Of all the forest creatures, take care Stand facing the tree with the blue blaze Here you start your way into the woodland maze Look to your left A fallen tree has faced death Turn right at three arrows and follow your gaze Now you should see a stone wall on both sides Look for another blue mark as your guide Walk for a while But don't be fra-gile And soon you will come to a mossy hillside Take plenty of time to identify a tree Most spruces are green and poke as you see Look for a nook That a small animal took But keep your hands out in case there's a bee Soon you will enter a mossy glade Light through the trees a soft cascade A mossy ridge A sunken foot bridge Chlorophyll makes the moss shades of jade Be sure not to litter So you can save all the critters Careful for biting bugs And super slimy slugs For them, the birds of prey titter It is a long walk As the clock goes tick and tock You may slip and slide On the steep hillside Made of a large granite rock To the bottom of the hill you need to be Where you'll hear the call of the sea On your downhill lurch You will spy a fallen birch Keep yourself moving to the wooden “teepee” When you get there, don't turn left If so, that might be your last breath Not true, just playing So don't get to fraying But seriously, don't turn left Walking along, with forest on your right To the left a small trail will alight Down to the bench Overlooking a trench Stay for a rest at this John's Bay site Go back up to the trail from which you came When you get there, take a left down the lane You will see a large fallen tree Former home to a Maine chickadee But don't go to the beach if you require a cane When you look to the left, a beach you will see And to think how old this beach must be Large chunks of granite and slate Are common in our little state Your duty is to protect every species you see Observe but don't step on the slippery green seaweed And take in the beauty of the deep green sea Our waters are not clear Though there is much to hear Underwater, where the bottom dwellers feed From the beach, head up the steep hill It's a very long way, but keep at it still You can look at the cliffs But don't be too stiff Or you'll fall and pay a hospital bill Now is the time to look all around Because the treasure box soon will be found It is fun to play You can be there all day But be sure to stay on solid ground The cliff to the right doesn't lead to the box To an oak with a blue blaze your group must walk A large tree guards a crack Then look in the back You'll find the treasure in a gap in the rocks Place your stamp after the quest We sure hope it was one of the best: Congratulations, you've found the box Among all the sticks, roots, and rocks Bask in the glory You've got a great story This must be among your best walks Continue on the uphill trail To the right at the white sign with a nail Past the large boulder The air may feel colder Keep on your loyal partner's tail To the place with ponds on each side The nature trail is beaten and wide With trees all about Can you find your way out? On your way by, walk with pride set aside This trail had many twists and turns We hope you've found much to learn About the different trees And the buzzing bees And that some day, you will return |
