Aleks
Aleks is a self-paced online math program. I use this program as a supplement to help students review math topics they already know and to push those student who need a challenge to learn and master new topics to them.
5th graders access Aleks by going to aleks.com. 6th, 7th and 8th graders have to go to https://connected.mcgraw-hill.com. There, they click on the cover of their math book. The 1st time they log in, they have to click on the menu on the upper left side of the screen and click Resources. From there, pick any chapter in the book and Aleks will show up as one of the resources (it looks like a colorful pie graph). Once the student has gotten into Aleks, she or he logs in using the username and password they have attached to the inside cover of their student planners.
At the beginning of the year, students take a pre-assessment in Aleks which allows them to bypass some of the topics for their grade level. Then they work one topic at a time, trying to master each one. A typical student masters 4-10 topics in a given week. As the % of mastered topics increases, fewer topics are mastered each week. Each grade level has about 300-400 topics to master. I challenge students to master 100% of the topics. This is a challenging feat given the limited amount of time I require them to be on the program.
You can check your child’s mastery progress by clicking/tapping on the center of their pie for the % of topics mastered. You can also check to see how many minutes have been completed in a given week by clicking on Reports in the main menu.
5th and 6th graders have 45 minutes of Aleks to do each week. 7th and 8th graders have 50 minutes. This time needs to be completed between Monday at 8AM one week to 8AM on Monday morning the next week.
