Academic Study
A long-standing aid for 5th-8th grade students is available Monday-Thursday afternoons from 2:35-3:30. We call it Academic Study. This is a quiet space for students to get work done and to get help. Students can opt to stay any day they’d like to get help or simply to get some work done. Students can also earn their way into Academic Study by not completing assignments on time. Though not many students want to get Academic Study Notices, the space and time does prove valuable for everyone.
Below is the procedure for students who get an Academic Study notice for not having their work done on time.
1st notice: This is a warning only. The student does not have to stay after school the following day. A parent/guardian just needs to sign the notice and the student returns it to the teacher.
2nd notice: Stay the next day in Academic Study
3rd notice: Stay after the next 2 days
4th notice: Stay after the next 4 days and the parent needs to contact the school to set up a meeting to discuss and lay out a plan for the child that will work for all parties involved.
Note: at the beginning of each new trimester, students get a clean slate and start with zero Academic Study Notices.
Any student in 5th-8th grade that is staying for after school care goes to Academic Study until 3:30PM. This allows the younger students some time to unwind and to do age appropriate activities before the big kids come. It also allows the older students to get some or all of their homework done before leaving school.
